핵심 정리

도치는 주어와 동사의 순서를 바꾸는 것입니다. 강조나 문법 규칙 때문에 일어납니다.

일반 문장 도치 문장
I have never seen this. Never have I seen this.
He had hardly left. Hardly had he left.

도치의 원인 구조 예문
부정어 강조 부정어 + 조동사 + 주어 Never did I think so.
장소 강조 장소 + 동사 + 주어 On the hill stands a tree.
보어 강조 보어 + 동사 + 주어 Happy is the man.
so, neither So + 조동사 + 주어 So do I.
가정법 Had + 주어 + p.p. Had I known, ...

1. 부정어 도치

부정어를 절 전체 앞에 내세우면 의문문 어순이 됩니다. 주어 자체를 연결하는 not only A but also B에는 도치하지 않습니다.

동사 구조 예문
be동사 부정어 + be + 주어 Never was she happy.
조동사 부정어 + 조동사 + 주어 + 원형 Never will I forget.
일반동사 부정어 + do/does/did + 주어 + 원형 Never did I see him.
완료 부정어 + have + 주어 + p.p. Never have I seen it.

자주 쓰는 부정어

부정어 뜻 예문
never 결코 ~않다 Never have I been so happy.
hardly, scarcely 거의 ~않다 Hardly did he speak.
rarely, seldom 좀처럼 ~않다 Rarely do we go out.
little 조금도 ~않다 Little did I know.
not only ~뿐만 아니라 Not only did he come, but he also helped.
not until ~하고 나서야 Not until 2020 did I move.
no sooner ~하자마자 No sooner had I left than it rained.
at no time 어느 때도 ~않다 At no time did he complain.
under no circumstances 어떤 경우에도 ~않다 Under no circumstances should you open it.
only + 부사구 오직 ~해야 Only then did I understand.

2. 장소, 방향 도치

장소나 방향을 앞에 두면 동사 + 주어 순서입니다.

문장 뜻
On the table was a book. 탁자 위에 책이 있었다.
Here comes the bus. 버스가 온다.
There goes my bus. 버스가 간다.
Down came the rain. 비가 내렸다.
In the room sat an old man. 방에 노인이 앉아 있었다.

주어가 대명사이면 도치하지 않습니다.

  • Here it comes. (Here comes it ✗)
  • There he goes. (There goes he ✗)

3. 보어 도치

보어를 앞에 두면 be동사 + 주어 순서입니다.

문장 뜻
So great was the noise that I woke up. 소음이 너무 커서 나는 잠에서 깼다.
Such was his anger that he left. 그의 분노가 너무 커서 그는 나갔다.
Attached is the report. 보고서를 첨부합니다.
Enclosed are the documents. 서류를 동봉합니다.

4. so, neither, nor 도치

상대의 말에 '나도 그래' 라고 답할 때 씁니다.

앞 문장 표현 예문
긍정문 So + 동사 + 주어 A: I like it. B: So do I.
부정문 Neither/Nor + 동사 + 주어 A: I don't like it. B: Neither do I.

앞 문장의 동사에 맞춥니다.

I am tired. So am I.
I went there. So did I.
I can swim. So can I.
I have finished. So have I.
I can't swim. Neither can I.

So I do와 So do I

So do I. 나도 그래.
So I do. 정말 그래. (상대의 말에 동의)

5. 가정법 도치

if를 생략하면 도치가 일어납니다.

6. as, than 도치

격식 있는 글에서는 as, than 뒤에서 도치하기도 합니다.

  • She studied hard, as did her brother.
  • He ran faster than did the others.

보통 예문

Never have I seen such a beautiful place. 이렇게 아름다운 곳은 본 적이 없다.
Rarely does he eat breakfast. 그는 아침을 거의 먹지 않는다.
Little did I know that she was watching. 그녀가 지켜보고 있었다는 것을 전혀 몰랐다.
Not only is she smart, but she is also kind. 그녀는 똑똑할 뿐만 아니라 친절하기도 하다.

어려운 예문

예문 뜻
Not until the results were published did the public learn the truth. 결과가 발표되고 나서야 대중은 진실을 알았다.
Under no circumstances should employees share their passwords. 어떤 경우에도 직원은 비밀번호를 공유해서는 안 된다.
No sooner had the CEO resigned than the stock price began to rise. 대표가 사임하자마자 주가가 오르기 시작했다.

문법 오류

틀린 문장 맞는 문장 이유
Never I have seen this. Never have I seen this. 부정어 뒤는 도치입니다.
Never did I saw him. Never did I see him. did 뒤에는 원형을 씁니다.
Here comes she. Here she comes. 대명사는 도치하지 않습니다.
A: I don't know. B: So do I. B: Neither do I. 부정문입니다.
A: I went. B: So do I. B: So did I. 시제를 맞춥니다.
Not until 2020 I moved. Not until 2020 did I move. 도치가 필요합니다.
Hardly he had left. Hardly had he left. 도치가 필요합니다.
