핵심 정리

최상급은 셋 이상 중에서 가장 ~한 것을 나타냅니다.

구조: the + 최상급 + (in/of + 범위)

  • He is the tallest in my class.
  • This is the most expensive of the three.

1. 최상급 만들기

단어 규칙 예시
1음절 -est tall → tallest, fast → fastest
e로 끝남 -st large → largest, nice → nicest
단모음 + 단자음 자음을 한 번 더 쓰고 -est big → biggest, hot → hottest
자음 + y y를 i로 바꾸고 -est happy → happiest, easy → easiest
2음절 이상 most + 원급 most useful, most beautiful
-ly 부사 most + 원급 most quickly

2. in과 of

전치사 뒤에 오는 말 예문
in 장소, 집단 (단수) the tallest in the class
of 복수, 기간 the best of all, the coldest of the year

주로 다음 표현도 씁니다.

  • the best movie I've ever seen (내가 본 가장 좋은 영화)
  • the most beautiful place in the world (세상에서 가장 아름다운 곳)

3. the를 쓰지 않는 경우

같은 대상의 상태 비교 This lake is deepest here.
소유격 뒤 My best friend is Tom.
부사의 최상급 (선택) She sings (the) best.

4. 최상급을 이용한 표현

표현 뜻 예문
one of the + 최상급 + 복수명사 가장 ~한 것 중 하나 It's one of the best movies.
the least + 원급 가장 덜 ~한 This is the least expensive.
최상급 + 현재완료 지금까지 가장 ~한 It's the best I've ever had.
the second + 최상급 두 번째로 ~한 It's the second largest city.
by far the + 최상급 단연 가장 ~한 It's by far the best.
at least 적어도 It takes at least an hour.
at most 많아야 It takes an hour at most.
at best 잘해야 He'll be second at best.
do one's best 최선을 다하다 I'll do my best.
make the most of ~을 최대한 활용하다 Make the most of your time.

5. 비교급과 원급으로 최상급 표현하기

비교급 + than any other + 단수명사 Tom is taller than any other student in the class.
No other + 단수명사 + 비교급 + than No other student in the class is taller than Tom.
No other + 단수명사 + as ~ as No other student in the class is as tall as Tom.

It's the most tall building. It's the tallest building. 1음절은 -est입니다.
It's the most best. It's the best. 겹쳐 쓰지 않습니다.
One of the best movie One of the best movies 복수명사를 씁니다.
No other students is taller. No other student is taller. 단수명사를 씁니다.
It is the best than others. It is the best of all. 최상급과 than을 함께 쓰지 않습니다.

뜻 차이·권장 표현

표현 권장·대조 표현 구분 설명
the best of the class the best in the class 사용 빈도 차이 집단을 말할 때는 보통 in을 씁니다.
He is taller than any student in the class. He is taller than any other student in the class. 의미 차이 그가 그 반 학생이면 other가 필요합니다. 왼쪽은 그가 그 반 학생이 아닐 때 씁니다.
