기간 전치사는 얼마나 오랫동안, 언제부터 언제까지를 나타냅니다.

전치사 뜻 뒤에 오는 말 예문

1. for와 during

전치사 묻는 내용 예문
for 얼마나 오래? I slept for eight hours.
during 언제? I slept during the movie.

2. since

과거의 시작점부터 지금까지 이어짐을 나타냅니다. 주로 현재완료와 함께 씁니다.

for와 since

전치사 뒤에 오는 말 예문
for 기간 길이 for ten years, for two months
since 시작 시점 since 2015, since last week

3. until과 by

until은 그때까지 계속되는 동작에, by는 그때까지 한 번 끝나는 동작에 씁니다.

by 늦어도 그때까지 finish, submit, send, return Please finish it by 5.

4. 기타 기간 표현

표현 뜻 예문
through 처음부터 끝까지 I studied through the night.
throughout ~ 내내 It rained throughout the day.
over ~에 걸쳐 Sales rose over the past year.
within ~ 이내에 Reply within three days.
from now on 지금부터 계속 From now on, I'll be careful.
between A and B A와 B 사이 Call me between 2 and 3.

in과 within

표현 뜻 예문
in + 기간 ~ 뒤에 I'll leave in two days.
within + 기간 ~ 이내에 I'll leave within two days.

5. 전치사와 접속사

during은 전치사이므로 명사가 오고, while은 접속사이므로 절이 옵니다.

단어 뒤에 오는 말 예문
during 명사 during the meeting
while 주어 + 동사 while we were meeting

since와 until은 전치사와 접속사로 모두 쓰입니다.

  • I've been here since 9. (전치사)
  • I've been here since you left. (접속사)

예문 뜻
The population has doubled over the past thirty years. 인구는 지난 30년에 걸쳐 두 배가 되었다.
All refunds must be requested within 14 days of purchase. 모든 환불은 구매 후 14일 이내에 요청해야 한다.
The company has been losing money since the beginning of the year. 그 회사는 연초부터 계속 손실을 보고 있다.

8. 한국인이 자주 하는 실수

문법 오류

틀린 문장 맞는 문장 이유
I stayed during three days. I stayed for three days. 숫자 기간에는 for를 씁니다.
Finish it until Monday. Finish it by Monday. 끝나는 동작에는 by를 씁니다.
Wait here by 5. Wait here until 5. 계속되는 동작에는 until을 씁니다.
I've lived here since five years. I've lived here for five years. 기간에는 for를 씁니다.
I live here since 2020. I have lived here since 2020. since는 주로 현재완료와 씁니다.
during I was sleeping while I was sleeping 절 앞에는 while을 씁니다.

뜻 차이·권장 표현
