핵심 정리

관계부사는 시간, 장소, 이유, 방법을 나타내는 선행사를 설명합니다. 전치사 + 관계대명사와 같습니다.

관계부사 선행사 같은 표현 예문
when 시간 (the day, the time) in/on/at which I remember the day when we met.
where 장소 (the place, the city) in/at/on which This is the house where I live.
why 이유 (the reason) for which I know the reason why he left.
how 방법 (the way) in which This is how I did it.

1. 관계부사 만들기

두 문장 합친 문장
This is the house. I live in the house. This is the house where I live.
I remember the day. We met on the day. I remember the day when we met.
Tell me the reason. You left for the reason. Tell me the reason why you left.
This is the way. I did it in the way. This is how I did it.

2. 관계부사와 관계대명사

관계대명사는 관계절 안에서 주어, 목적어, 전치사의 목적어 역할을 하고, 소유격 whose는 뒤의 명사를 꾸밉니다. 관계부사는 장소, 시간, 이유 등을 나타내는 부사 역할을 합니다. 선행사가 장소여도 절 안에서 목적어가 비어 있으면 관계대명사를 씁니다.

'주어나 목적어가 비어 있는가'를 보조 기준으로 쓸 수 있습니다. whose + 명사로 소유 관계를 나타내는 경우는 별도로 확인합니다.

관계부사 장소를 나타내는 부사 This is the city where I stayed.
관계대명사 목적어 This is the city which I visited.

전치사 + 관계대명사

3. how의 쓰임

the way와 how는 함께 쓰지 않습니다. 둘 중 하나만 씁니다.

  • This is the way I did it. (○)
  • This is how I did it. (○)
  • This is the way how I did it. (✗)

선행사의 생략

when, where, why 앞의 선행사도 생략할 수 있습니다.

  • That's why I left. (That's the reason why I left.)
  • This is where I work.
  • That's when I realized it.

4. 자주 쓰는 표현

표현 뜻 예문
That's why ~ 그래서 ~하다 That's why I called.
That's how ~ 그렇게 해서 ~하다 That's how we met.
That's where ~ 그곳이 ~한 곳이다 That's where I work.
This is when ~ 이때 ~하다 This is when it gets hard.

계속적 용법

when과 where는 쉼표와 함께 쓸 수 있습니다. why와 how는 쓰지 않습니다.

We live in an age when information spreads instantly. 우리는 정보가 즉시 퍼지는 시대에 살고 있다.
The reason why the project failed is that it lacked funding. 프로젝트가 실패한 이유는 자금이 부족했기 때문이다.
This study examines how remote work affects productivity. 이 연구는 원격 근무가 생산성에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 조사한다.

문법 오류

틀린 문장 맞는 문장 이유
This is the way how I did it. This is how I did it. 둘을 함께 쓰지 않습니다.
This is the house where I live in. This is the house where I live. 전치사를 지웁니다.
This is the place where I visited. This is the place which I visited. visited의 목적어가 비어 있으므로 관계대명사를 씁니다.
That's the reason because I left. That's the reason why I left. 이유는 why를 씁니다.
I remember the day where we met. I remember the day when we met. 시간은 when입니다.

뜻 차이·권장 표현

The reason is because I was late. The reason is that I was late. 격식·지역 차이 회화에서는 왼쪽도 쓰지만, 격식 있는 글에서는 that을 씁니다.
