핵심 정리

상관접속사는 두 단어가 짝을 이루어 말을 연결합니다.

접속사 뜻 예문
both A and B A와 B 둘 다 Both Tom and Jin came.
either A or B A나 B 중 하나 Either you or I am wrong.
neither A nor B A도 B도 아닌 Neither Tom nor Jin came.
not A but B A가 아니라 B It's not red but blue.
not only A but also B A뿐만 아니라 B도 She's not only smart but also kind.
B as well as A A뿐만 아니라 B도 She's kind as well as smart.
whether A or B A든 B든 Whether you win or lose, I'm proud.

1. 동사의 수일치

표현 기준 예문
both A and B 복수 Both Tom and Jin are here.
either A or B B에 맞춤 Either you or he is wrong.
neither A nor B B에 맞춤 Neither Tom nor his parents are here.
not A but B B에 맞춤 Not you but she is wrong.
not only A but also B B에 맞춤 Not only you but also she is here.
B as well as A B에 맞춤 She, as well as you, is here.

2. 병렬 구조

A와 B는 같은 문법 형태여야 합니다.

틀린 문장 맞는 문장
She is both smart and works hard. She is both smart and hardworking.
I want either to stay or going. I want either to stay or to go.
He not only sings but also dancing. He not only sings but also dances.

접속사의 위치를 정확히 맞춥니다.

  • He not only speaks English but also teaches it. (동사 앞)
  • He speaks not only English but also French. (목적어 앞)

3. 표현별 주의 사항

not only A but also B

also는 생략할 수 있습니다.

  • She is not only smart but kind.

not only를 절 전체 앞에 내세우면 주어와 조동사를 도치합니다. 주어 자체를 연결하는 not only A but also B에는 도치하지 않습니다.

  • Not only did he win, but he also broke the record. (절 전체를 앞에 내세움)
  • Not only Tom but also Jane came. (주어를 연결함)

neither A nor B

neither에 부정의 뜻이 있으므로 동사를 부정하지 않습니다.

  • I like neither tea nor coffee. (○)
  • I don't like neither tea nor coffee. (✗)

부정문에서는 either A or B를 씁니다.

  • I don't like either tea or coffee. (○)

either, neither, both의 단독 쓰임

단어 뜻 예문
either 둘 중 하나 Either is fine.
neither 둘 다 아님 Neither is correct.
both 둘 다 Both are correct.

whether A or B

주어나 목적어로 쓰면 '~인지 아닌지'입니다.

  • I don't know whether he'll come or not.

부사절로 쓰면 '~든 아니든'입니다.

  • Whether you like it or not, you have to do it.

4. 기타 상관 표현

so ~ that 너무 ~해서 ~하다 It's so hot that I can't sleep.
such ~ that 너무 ~해서 ~하다 It's such a hot day that I can't work.
no sooner ~ than ~하자마자 No sooner had I left than it rained.
hardly ~ when ~하자마자 Hardly had I left when it rained.
the same ~ as ~와 같은 I have the same bag as you.
rather than ~보다 오히려 I'll walk rather than drive.

보통 예문

예문 뜻
She speaks not only English but also Chinese. 그녀는 영어뿐만 아니라 중국어도 한다.
Both my parents and my sister live in Busan. 부모님과 언니 모두 부산에 산다.
Neither the teacher nor the students were late. 선생님도 학생들도 늦지 않았다.
I don't know whether I should stay or go. 머물러야 할지 가야 할지 모르겠다.

어려운 예문

예문 뜻
The new law affects not only large firms but also small businesses. 새 법은 대기업뿐만 아니라 소기업에도 영향을 미친다.
Success depends not on luck but on hard work. 성공은 운이 아니라 노력에 달려 있다.
Whether the project succeeds or fails, we will learn from the experience. 프로젝트가 성공하든 실패하든 우리는 그 경험에서 배울 것이다.

일정 Either Monday or Tuesday works for me. 월요일이나 화요일 다 괜찮아요.
자기소개 I can speak both Korean and English. 저는 한국어와 영어를 둘 다 할 수 있습니다.
회의 It's not only cheap but also fast. 그것은 저렴할 뿐만 아니라 빠릅니다.
대화 Neither of us knows. 우리 둘 다 몰라요.
설득 Whether you agree or not, we have to start. 동의하든 안 하든 시작해야 합니다.

7. 한국인이 자주 하는 실수

문법 오류

틀린 문장 맞는 문장 이유
Both Tom and Jin is here. Both Tom and Jin are here. 복수입니다.
Both Tom or Jin Both Tom and Jin both는 and와 씁니다.
Either Tom nor Jin Either Tom or Jin either는 or와 씁니다.
Neither Tom or Jin Neither Tom nor Jin neither는 nor와 씁니다.
I don't want neither. I want neither. 또는 I don't want either. 이중 부정입니다.
Not only he came but also she came. Not only did he come, but she also came. not only를 절 전체 앞에 내세우면 도치합니다.

뜻 차이·권장 표현

Neither you nor I are wrong. Neither you nor I am wrong. 격식·지역 차이 회화에서는 왼쪽도 쓰지만, 격식체에서는 가까운 주어 I에 맞춥니다.
