핵심 정리

두 표현 모두 뒤에 동사원형을 씁니다.

표현 뜻 예문
had better ~하는 게 좋을 것이다 (안 하면 문제) You had better hurry.
would rather 차라리 ~하겠다 (선호) I would rather stay home.

과거처럼 보이는 had, would를 쓰지만 현재나 미래의 일을 말합니다.

1. had better

형태

부정 had better not + 원형 You'd better not be late.
줄임 'd better I'd better go.

should와의 차이

had better는 조언보다 강한 표현으로, 하지 않으면 나쁜 결과가 있다는 경고를 담고 있습니다.

표현 뉘앙스 예문
should 일반적인 조언 You should eat more vegetables.
had better 지금 당장, 경고 You'd better see a doctor.

손윗사람에게 쓰면 무례할 수 있습니다. 대신 should나 might want to를 씁니다.

2. would rather

형태

형태 구조 예문
긍정 would rather + 원형 I'd rather walk.
부정 would rather not + 원형 I'd rather not say.
비교 would rather A than B I'd rather walk than take a bus.
의문 Would you rather ~? Would you rather stay or go?

A와 B에는 모두 동사원형을 씁니다.

  • I'd rather stay home than go out.

다른 사람이 ~하기를 바랄 때

would rather + 주어 + 과거형을 씁니다. 형태는 과거지만 뜻은 현재입니다.

  • I'd rather you stayed here. (네가 여기 있으면 좋겠다.)
  • I'd rather you didn't smoke. (담배를 안 피우면 좋겠다.)

과거에 대한 선호

  • I'd rather have stayed at home. (집에 있는 편이 나았을 텐데.)

문법 오류

틀린 문장 맞는 문장 이유

You had not better go. You had better not go. not은 better 뒤에 둡니다.
You have better go. You had better go. had better가 고정 표현입니다.
I would rather to stay. I would rather stay. to를 쓰지 않습니다.
I would rather staying home. I would rather stay home. 뒤에는 원형을 씁니다.
I'd rather don't go. I'd rather not go. not을 씁니다.
