핵심 정리

There is/are는 '~이 있다' 라는 뜻으로, 어떤 것의 존재를 처음 알릴 때 씁니다. 여기서 there는 '거기'라는 뜻이 아닙니다.

구조 뒤에 오는 말 예문 뜻
There is 단수명사, 불가산명사 There is a cat here. 여기 고양이가 있다.
There are 복수명사 There are two cats here. 여기 고양이 두 마리가 있다.

동사는 뒤에 오는 진짜 주어에 맞춥니다.

1. 시제별 형태

조동사 there can be, there must be there can be, there must be

2. 부정문과 의문문

부정문 there isn't / aren't There isn't any milk.
부정문 there is no + 명사 There is no milk.
의문문 Is/Are there ~? Is there a bank nearby?
대답 Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.
  • How many people are there in your family?
  • How much time is there?

3. 함께 쓰는 수량 표현

표현 쓰임 예문
some 긍정문 There are some apples.
any 부정문, 의문문 Are there any apples?
many 복수명사 There are many people.
much 불가산명사 (부정문, 의문문) There isn't much time.
a lot of 복수, 불가산 There is a lot of traffic.

여러 명사를 나열할 때

일반적으로 첫 번째 명사에 맞춥니다.

  • There is a table and two chairs in the room.

4. 특정한 대상과 There is

There is는 처음 알리는 정보에 씁니다. 상대방이 아는 대상의 위치를 말할 때는 그 대상을 주어로 씁니다.

처음 알리기 There is a good cafe near my office.
이미 아는 대상 My phone is on the table.
어색한 문장 There is my phone on the table.

have와의 차이

5. 자주 쓰는 구문

보통 예문

예문 뜻
There was a big fire downtown last night. 어젯밤 시내에 큰 화재가 있었다.
How many students are there in your class? 너희 반에 학생이 몇 명 있어?
There will be a short break at three. 3시에 짧은 휴식이 있을 것이다.
There are a lot of good restaurants around here. 이 근처에 좋은 식당이 많다.

어려운 예문

예문 뜻
There has been a significant increase in online sales. 온라인 매출이 크게 증가했다.
There seems to be some confusion about the schedule. 일정에 대해 약간 혼란이 있는 것 같다.
There is growing evidence that air pollution affects brain health. 대기 오염이 뇌 건강에 영향을 준다는 증거가 늘고 있다.

8. 한국인이 자주 하는 실수

틀린 문장 맞는 문장 이유
There is three books. There are three books. 복수이므로 are를 씁니다.
There are a lot of water. There is a lot of water. water는 불가산명사입니다.
There have a problem. There is a problem. there 뒤에 have를 쓰지 않습니다.
Here has a bank. There is a bank here. 한국어의 '여기에 있다'를 직역한 오류입니다.
There is a my friend. My friend is there. 특정한 대상은 주어로 씁니다.
Is there any questions? Are there any questions? questions는 복수입니다.
There will have a party. There will be a party. will 뒤에는 be를 씁니다.
